Deana Carter

Deana Carter defied conventional expectations and shot to the top of the country charts upon the release of her 1996 debut, Did I Shave My Legs For This?, melding the popular appeal of country music with folk and a retro-rock edge. The daughter of famed studio guitarist/producer Fred Carter, Jr., Deana grew up in a musical environment. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, she learned the guitar and began to write songs and earned a writing deal with Polygram, which led to a record deal with Capitol Records. After hearing one of her demo tapes, Willie Nelson asked her to perform at Farm Aid VII in 1994, making her the only female artist on the bill. By the end of 1996, her debut album was at the top of the country charts and had crossed over to the pop charts, going gold. Carter followed up her debut success with Everything's Gonna Be Alright, I'm Just a Girl, Greatest Hits, The Story of My Life, and The Chain. Carter lives in Los Angeles where she writes and produces for the Pop/Rock and Country markets. Her success continues with her chart-topping song, “You and Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg, being nominated for CMA Song of the Year. Carter is currently in the studio producing her own record due out this year.
