The One and Only: Master Session with Greg Wells

From Kid Cudi to Katy Perry, Timbaland to Taylor Swift, the Deftones to the Count Basie Orchestra, there are few points on the music spectrum that haven’t been investigated by Grammy-nominated writer/producer Greg Wells. The one thing that informs all of Wells’s work, no matter the genre, is his musical imagination. Listen to his colorful production on Mika’s Life in Cartoon Motion, or the authentic soul ballad “One and Only” he and Adele co-wrote for her Grammy-winning 21, and you’ll hear the stamp of a studio wizard, as well-trained as he is creative. In addition to performing some of his best-known songs and fielding questions from the audience, Wells will talk about how he has been able to successfully balance artistry with commercialism throughout his diverse career.

The New Publishers: Writers Signing Writers

In recent years, we’ve seen an influx of successful songwriters becoming successful publishers by developing their own stables of up-and-coming songwriters. Why has this new phenomenon developed, how is it different from a traditional publishing arrangement, and why might it be attractive from a financial and creative perspective? Three hit ASCAP writers-turned-publishers will answer these questions and more in this provocative discussion.

ASCAP Members: Videotape a Message for Congress About Your Life as a Music Creator
For close to a century, ASCAP has been a leader in advocacy and grassroots efforts focused on protecting the rights of music creators. We had a great response to last year’s video initiative, designed to inform and educate key Washington policy makers and legislators about the issues that affect the music community. As a follow up, we are once more looking to capture testimonials from ASCAP members and fellow music creators at this year’s EXPO. If you would like to have your voice heard by your respective Members of Congress and others, please stop by Room #325 to take part in a brief video interview and articulate what being a music creator means to you!

SoundExchange: What It Is, Why It Pays, and How to Get Your Share

SoundExchange will explain how registering (for free!) with them can earn you royalties for plays on satellite radio, Internet radio, cable TV music channels and other services that stream sound recordings. SoundExchange is a non-profit, and an important source of revenue for all artists (big and small) and labels (indie and major): they've distributed over $900 million to artists and labels so far. But thousands of artist and labels don't know they need to register, and millions in royalties haven't yet been claimed. Interactive and question-driven, this workshop will also cover need-to-know info on copyright, licensing, metadata, and legislation that will affect your career.
